Climatology 2013: NOAA LINK: http://www.weather.gov/forecastmaps
12 degrees, 16 degree, and 18 degree nights at Mesa Top. 2-3 inches of snow and some snow still on the ground the day after it fell. Kind of cool for April. And more cool weather on the way! Greening up our favored pasture areas and cool season grasses. And so far only good news from our fruit producing areas! Let’s all keep our orchardists and their valleys in our prayers, hoping for a productive season.
This week’s Cow stories: Mesa Top cows and Jim Miller Ayrshire project: Maya (mother of Thrasher, the brain damaged calf who I wrote about extensively in summer 2012) had her calf, a beautiful little heifer. Momma and baby are healthy and doing well. Now Bow rotates off the milk line with her 7 month old heifer, and out on the range with the dry cow herd.
We are milking three, Blanca, Brown and Maya. We think Flower will calf soon also.
This week’s protein update: We have veal loin chops to sell. We have some beef for family beef and family value shares also. The Mesa Top meat program and its merit and value to the CSA membership needs review. Ground beef still available!
This week’s cheese making update: We have tried some every other day milking and it seems to be fine for the momma cows and the calfs. Chile cheese making almost done. Hope to be sharing it with CSA members in July or early August after it has reached a reasonable age.
This week’s Veggie/Share Update: This week’s share includes some first of the season field crops and some storage crops from last season and quite a mix of greenhouse crops from Preferred Produce.
First of 2014 crop is green garlic bunches from Frisco Farm in Silver City.
2013 Fall/storage crops are yellow and red potatoes from White Mountain Farm, Black beans from Olathe Farm, and chicos from Guzman Farm.
And the bounty from Preferred Produce includes cantaloupe, butter/ lollarosa lettuce, lacinato kale, also called Dino kale, grape tomatoes, and cucumbers.
