Member message for Beneficial Farm CSA, week February 20th, 2014
NOAA LINK: http://www.weather.gov/forecastmaps Record high temperatures! Green grass in the favored spots at Mesa Top Farm in Mid February. This is scary.
This week’s Cow stories: Mesa Top cows and Jim Miller Ayrshire project: The cows are eating well and starting to range further across the pastures. There are some spots where green vegetation is starting to show up, but certainly not enough to feed the herd. Herd health remains very good, the cows all seem happy!
This week’s protein update: Beef shares are back, and there is plenty of ground beef, veal shares are well stocked. Large turkeys: reduced cost to members! Order ahead please as they are stored in Albuquerque in a commercial freezer.
This week’s cheese making update: One or two wheels a week of great, Salado jack coming out of the cheese room. Plenty of great milk from just 3 cows! Hopefully more fresh cows coming on line soon. New herd share members would be welcomed. Herd share brings you weekly raw milk.
This week’s Veggie/Share Update:
This week your share includes a nice mix of produce and more. From outside the produce world we have organic, stone ground whole wheat flour from Mountain Mama in Monte Vista, Colorado. We also have organic apple juice from Big B’s in Hotchkiss, Colorado. From the greenhouses at Preferred Produce we have red bell pepper, cluster tomatoes, and cucumbers. And a special treat from Preferred: honeydew melons From the storage cellars at Malandra Farms we have parsnips, and from the Equal Exchange Cooperative in Michocan Mexico, we again have organic avocados. From the groves at South Texas organics we have sweet and juicy Hamlin oranges.
