Member message for Beneficial Farm CSA, week of November 7th 2013

Climatology 2013:   Amazing theatrics in the sky, beginning Monday night and continuing until almost sunrise on Tuesday as wave upon wave of thunder and terrific lightning accompanied storms whose duration would have been unusual even during monsoon season.  By the time the clouds began to clear Tuesday morning it was wet and muddy indeed at Mesa Top.  This effect was created by a broad swath of tropical moisture being drawn up into New Mexico, and then a vigorous cold front plowing into it from the Northwest.  Not too many years ago conditions like this would have led to a strong early season snow, even down to the 7,000 foot level.  Now it’s rain, but significant accumulating snows at the higher elevations.

This week’s Cow stories:  Mesa Top cows and Jim Miller Ayrshire project:  The Mesa Top herd at Herrera ranch is settling in.  We are hauling water to them, and find them happily lounging around their water tank, having only a short walk to deep grass.  They are looking sleek and ready for winter

You can’t make this stuff up, a final chapter:  We lost little Forrest Junior, Tippy’s calf, who was found sleeping in the middle of the County road by a passing neighbor about 6 weeks ago.  He never really “got going”, never learned to nurse on his momma, did not become a bouncing rambunctious calf, and never grew and put on weight.  We gave him a good shot, but he did not have the “will to live” that we have seen in some of our compromised cows over the years, that pulls them through.

This week’s protein update:

We turned the turkeys loose into one final area of the garden for grazing, insect eating, and cleanup duties.  They are busy and happy.  We will be harvesting the bulk of them on Thursday and Friday November 21 and 22.

We have been told that you can order them now on the Beneficial CSA marketplace.  Choose between small, medium, and large turkeys, and place a deposit and we will work out a schedule for delivery/pickup.  After delivery your account will be charged the balance due.

If you are interested, please let Dena know.

This week’s cheese making update:  Cheesemaking continues.  Anyone interested in learning more about Mesa Top’s simple raw cheesemaking system should contact the farm at 575-422-2238.

This week’s Veggie/Share Update:  This week’s share is strong with greenhouse greens.  Talon de Gato’s season extending hoop houses is a major contributor to the share, with arugula, swiss chard, and Salad mix.  Mesa Top’s greenhouse also has some salad mix.

From the greenhouses at Preferred Produce we are receiving green onions and grape tomatoes.

We have organic carrots from Synergia Ranch and a head of garlic from La Madera Farm.

Rounding out the share we have the last-of-the-year organic apples from Rogers Mesa in Hotchkiss, Colorado.

Thank you farmers!
