Steve’s Update 5/23/12

Climatology 2012:  We had one last cool day with a little bit of a thunder storm and now the heat is on.  Hottest days of the year so far.

This week’s Cow stories:  Mesa Top cows and Jim Miller Ayrshire project:  I have written up a summary of the benefits of grazing and leasing land to a livestock owner who can graze it.  Now we will see if there are any neighbors who want to take advantage of those benefits.  We do need some grass!

This week’s cheese making update:  Cheesemaking schedule in the works.  Other than that, nothing new from cheese-land.  Planning to break into the muenster soon.

This week’s cheese share includes: Tucumcari smoked Gouda and Asiago.

Mesa Top Meat (Protein) update:   Pork and beef processing are set for later this week, and will be available again to CSA members by the second week in June.

This week’s Veggie/Share Update:  This week we have the first produce from Mesa Top since 2010.  We took last summer off to rest the land and concentrate on the cheese making and cattle.  Now, with the help of garden manager Ben Hill, we are back in production.  This week’s baby bok choi comes from Mesa Top.

We also have just received our annual delivery of garlic braids and loose garlic from the Southern Tip of the Baja.  Ben Roninger farms in Idaho in the summer and works with several family farmers on the Southern tip of the Baja Peninsula in the winter.  The garlic harvested there is the first of the season north of the equator.  You can pull the heads off of the braid one by one and cook with them as you need them.  We have some loose garlic as well, that we will offer in June and July.  Then by August our own Northern Garlic should be ready.

We also have red bell peppers from Preferred Produce in Deming.  We had a terrific load of chard from Preferred, but it got “cooked” Tuesday morning on the trip up from Deming.  It is going to be important to see how to get Preferred produce into refrigerated delivery ASAP.

We also have green garlic from Gemini the last of spring spinach from Red Mountain Farm, and pea shoots (as a last minute fill in for the lost chard) from SunGreen living foods.

Membership news:  Please keep referring new members!  We add $10 to your Farm Account for every member you refer.

Thank you for your investment in and support of the CSA .  We appreciate your continued support!
