April Garden Events by Steve

Waffle Garden at the Railyard Community Garden

April and sunshine have arrived in Santa Fe.  The Garden Outreach Program by Beneficial Farms has three events at community gardens this month.  Steve will be continuing his workshops on preparing the land and planning your planting beds.

Tomorrow, April 3rd, Steve will hold a free workshop at the Milagro Community Garden on Rodeo Road at 2pm.  This community garden started in 1999 and has many long-time gardeners and Master Gardener members.  There are at least five Beneficial Farms CSA members that garden at this location and some of our volunteers do as well.  Steve worked with this garden five times last year to help with everything from planting to tomato care.  He will be discussing the planning process for soil and planting tomorrow.  There will be hands-on experience for those that want to work in a garden plot and try some of Steve’s techniques.  Email me at blog@beneficialfarm.com or call 473-1403 if you want to attend and need directions to the garden.  It is a great time to start thinking about planting in your backyard or there are many community garden options to join this year.

We had a wonderful (but cold!) event last week at the Railyard Community Garden.  Ten attendees learned about the types of dirt they might find in their backyards and how to start converting it into a vegetable growing landscape.  Steve and a team from Mesa Top Farm brought garden forks to show the techniques of gently moving the dirt and the attendees jumped into the garden to try it, and warm up.  Steve will have a second event at the Railyard next Sunday at 10am to discuss planting. Contact Eliza Kretzmann at 982-6975 for more information or visit www.railyardpark.org

Next week Steve will also hold an event at the Eldorado School Community Garden at 2pm.  The topics will be planning your gardens.  See the list of all the April events below and email me at blog@beneficialfarm.com if you have any questions.  We will plan May events and an event at Mesa Top Farm soon.
