New Year, Local Food and Gardening

Hello members.  I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season and prepared your new year’s resolutions, if you do those lists.  I can share that my resolutions revolve around gardening and improving my diet with more local foods.  There was a great show on the Food Network last Sunday that involved the same goals, but it was the First Lady challenging the Iron Chefs to cook with local ingredients from the White House garden.  The Iron Chef America show on Food Network is a cooking competition that has a secret ingredient.  It was amazing to see the chefs go to the White House garden and use the local food concept for the secret ingredient.  What a great message to hear as we move into 2010.  Click here for the website link if you want to see more details on the show.

It was great to see the garden in the show and that started me thinking about my 2010 garden.  It is never too early in the year to start planning and ordering seeds.  Beneficial Farms CSA will have a gardening group again this year and it will kick-off this month with a gardening blog column.  I would like to introduce Duskin Jasper as the writer. He is a Master Gardener and a leader at the Milagro Community Garden.  We have four CSA members from this garden and I know that we look to Duskin to discuss plants, soil and organic solutions.  It will be exciting to move through the spring with his tips and advice.  Look for more details on other Garden Group items, such as visits to Mesa Top Farm and the community gardens.  I know many of you attended them last year to ask Steve your questions.

Let me know if you have any New Year’s resolutions to share with the CSA.
